Intro:
The skincare routine that works for women may not be the
best skincare routine for men, and vice versa. But, this doesn’t mean you have
to sacrifice your skin just because you have the wrong gender! Follow these few
steps to find a solid skincare routine that works for you, no matter your
gender!
Step 1: Wash your face
It may seem counterintuitive, but washing your face
regularly with a gentle cleanser is an important part of a men’s skincare
routine. This will help to keep oil production under control (and excess oil on
your face can lead to acne breakouts). It’s also a good idea to use a washcloth
when you cleanse your face. The exfoliating action of rubbing it with a
washcloth can be enough to remove dead skin cells without irritating your skin.
Step 2: Exfoliate
Exfoliating regularly helps remove dead skin cells
and keep pores unclogged. Exfoliating also keeps your face smooth by removing
dry, flaky patches of skin which can block pores and cause acne. To exfoliate,
you can use a loofah or soft-bristled facial brush to gently sweep away dead
skin cells. Or try scrubs that contain beads or granules that slough off rough
spots, such as Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel ($25). These
types of scrubs tend to be less abrasive than regular exfoliators and are
formulated with ingredients like fruit enzymes that are especially kind to
sensitive skin. To prevent irritation, scrubbing should be done only
once or twice a week.
Step 3: Moisturize
Keep your skin hydrated. The body is made up of about 70%
water, and you need to keep it that way if you want to remain healthy. Use a
daily moisturizer (preferably SPF 15 or greater) before putting on your clothes
and/or applying cologne, as it’s better to be protected from harmful UV rays
than try to block them out later on in life. Excessive exposure can lead to
wrinkles, discoloration, and skin cancer—all things no man wants. Besides
sunblock, use another moisturizer at night if needed; just make sure not to
apply too much product so that you won’t have excess oil on your face when you
wake up.
Step 4: Protect your skin
Sun protection is paramount to any skincare
routine—especially if you want to maintain a youthful appearance. If you’re
under 30, you should be using an SPF of at least 15 every day. From 30–50, use
a daily SPF of at least 20. And from 50 on up, make sure you’re using an SPF of
at least 30 every day—it’s never too late to protect your skin from future damage!
Using a moisturizer with an SPF is also important in fighting wrinkles and fine
lines as you age. Applying it as part of your morning routine can make all the
difference in how quickly your face becomes dry or oily throughout each day.
Step 5: Conceal blemishes
Use your favorite concealer or face powder to cover any
blemishes. The powder should be lightweight and translucent so that it blends well
with your skin tone and isn’t noticeable. Look for loose or pressed powder in
an airtight container, since they tend to last longer than pressed powders.
Apply a small amount of product using a soft makeup brush to conceal acne,
redness, scars, or tattoos. For best results, don’t use concealer on sensitive
areas like around your eyes; too much product can irritate your skin and cause
puffiness. And no matter what you do, never apply makeup on open wounds—they
could get infected!
Section 6: Treat yourself!
Self-care doesn’t have to be a luxury reserved for spa days, wine,, and candlelit dinners. Self-care can be as simple as taking five minutes to breathe deeply and look at a plant. It doesn’t have to cost you anything either, though you might feel a little silly! Just because someone else defines what is self-care for you, doesn’t mean it has to stay that way.
